Veterinary practices nationwide are joining forces with Britain’s leading veterinary charity, PDSA, to offer free health checks to pets during the first ever PDSA National PetCheck Week (22 – 28 September). To support the week, PDSA has developed a diet and fitness guide with weight loss expert Rosemary Conley to help your pet (be it a Great Dane, tabby cat or gerbil) and you get fit and stay healthy.
With nearly 50% of dogs and 20% of cats in the UK suffering from weight problems, PDSA’s National PetCheck Week will encourage all pet owners to be aware of their pets’ state of health. During the week, veterinary practices across Britain, including PDSA’s network of 46 PetAid hospitals, will be allocating time for the provision of free health checks to pets whose owners are eligible to register for care.
PDSA’s ‘Diet & Fitness for You and Your Pet’ guide will also be launched during the week. It includes practical diet and exercise guidelines recommended by PDSA for dogs, cats, rabbits and ‘small furries’ (hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs etc), as well as top tips for pet owners’ health from diet and fitness expert Rosemary Conley.
Despite regular health warnings from PDSA, the charity’s vets and nurses still see too many pets with serious health conditions that are a direct consequence of these animals being overweight. This situation is avoidable, provided pets are fed and exercised correctly. If your pet is overweight, this can lead to difficulty in exercising and heart problems, plus many more conditions that decrease your pet’s enjoyment of life and its lifespan.
PDSA’s National PetCheck Week forms part of the charity’s ongoing PetCheck Programme which is already well underway. For the second year running a purpose-built 30ft mobile vehicle is touring the country to provide free PetChecks to dogs and free general health advice for all pets.
So why not ask your own veterinary practice if they are taking part in PDSA’s National PetCheck Week and start a new diet and fitness regime for you and your pet?
