Crufts 2004, the world's most prestigious dog show begins next week (4-7 March). Saga says that even if your four legged friend isn't a 'Best of Breed', pet insurance is important for every type and size of dog. Saga's research shows that 41%* of the 6.2 million** dogs owned in the UK are crossbreeds. However, only 15% of these are insured*** even though treatment costs for crossbreeds are just as high as those for pedigree pets.
Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive, Saga, commented: "Anyone who does not insure their dog runs the risk of having to meet huge vets bills. It's not only pedigree dogs that are worth insuring: the cost of treatment for cross breeds is just as high."
Pet owners who do not take out insurance could find that they have to meet expensive vets bills if their dog is taken ill, and needs treatment or an operation. For example, a hip replacement can cost £1,500. In some cases owners could find that they are left paying for treatment for the rest of the pet's life. If a dog is diagnosed with diabetes, the treatment could cost around £800 each year. This could total many thousands of pounds during the lifespan of the animal.
Some insurance policies may only cover treatment for a condition for up to 12 months, whilst others may have a limit per condition and may exclude cover for that condition going forward. Customers should always check what levels of cover apply when they are taking out a policy, to ensure they will have adequate cover to meet their pets needs.
Saga's Pet Insurance starts at a monthly charge of £8.28 for a dog and includes costs of treatment for accident, illness or disease. In addition it will cover kennel costs should the owner have to spend more than 72 hours in hospital. It will reimburse your non-recoverable expenses, if, as a pet owner, you need to cancel your holiday because your pet needs emergency surgery.
Saga have published a free guide to pet health, which provides advice and guidance on all the main aspects of pet health, for owners of pets of all ages. To obtain a free copy call 0800 056 5096
